The Senior Center affects many people in Woodward and the surrounding areas. It gives senior citizens a place to go and something to do. It’s kept many of them at home and out of nursing homes because as they so often tell us, “it gives them a reason to get up in the morning”. To participate in The Senior Center is to participate in community life. One of the major problems affecting our older citizens today is their loss of role and status in life. The Center provides opportunities and options for establishing substitute roles for former employee, employer, parent, homemaker, and decision maker. The Senior Center, through its program, helps the older person to feel that he or she can and should continue to contribute to their community and that they are a wanted and valued part of the community. Our program encourages socialization, which satisfies one of the most basic needs of all people, the need to love and be loved. Loneliness can be one of the most destructive emotions to the human spirit. Several studies have revealed a relationship between loneliness and health problems. Our participants are frequently the victims of changing personal relationships resulting from the loss of a spouse or close friends. Retirement from employment diminishes the older person’s circle of friends and acquaintances. Married children move away and it reduces the pleasure and security of their elderly parents.
