Purpose of Position: This is a non-exempt position within the Police Department and is under the general direction of the Chief of police.
Summary of Essential Duties:
· Shall be responsible for the completion of all forms and paperwork as required. He/she shall also be responsible for the delivery or filing of necessary paperwork in the orderly confinement of prisoners in the jail.
· Checks all prisoners at his/her assigned time to determine their welfare and to note any request or complaints.
· Observes each prisoner carefully and shall initial the booking sheet of each prisoner along with noting the date and time and the type of action that was taken.
· Provides prisoner with three adequate meals during posted meal times, two of which shall be hot.
· Ensures that prisoners are given clean clothing if held for over a forty‑-eight hour period.
· Ensures that all jail rules are equally enforced for all prisoners and notifies the supervisor when violations of the jail rules are observed which could interrupt the orderly operation of the jail.
· Fingerprints and photographs all prisoners.
· All prisoners will be searched and all personal possessions will be surrendered. Prisoner's property shall be inventoried and a receipt will be given for the property taken and the property shall be stored properly until such time of the prisoner's release.
· Each prisoner shall be allowed to make at least two completed telephone calls during the admission process before being placed in the jail unless circumstances exist which would interrupt the orderly function in the jail area.
· In case of a fire, he/she makes sure that all essential personnel is notified but shall not begin evacuation of the jail without the presence of an officer unless waiting would endanger lives.
· Shall notify appropriate personnel about prisoners who appear to have a significant medical or psychiatric problem, or who may be a suicide risk.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Must be 21 years of age or older.
· Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
· Must be a citizen of the United States of America.
· Must be able to pass the Oklahoma Jailers exam annually.
· Must be able to handle hostile prisoners.
· Must not have been convicted of a felony.
· Ability to read, understand and interpret ordinances, laws, and other operating procedures and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
· Ability to remain calm in emergency situations, and perform first aid or CPR.
· Ability and willingness to maintain strict confidentiality.
· Must be able to respond to varying situations with tact and diplomacy and know how to deal with stressful, hostile or irrational persons, whether due to physical or mental disability, drugs, socio-economic differences, or other factors.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
· Possibility of body attacks and bodily harm.
· Must possess the physical strength and stamina to be able to restrain and subdue hostile prisoners.
· Great probability of working all hours, extended hours, emergency call out, and to testify at court on days off.
· Must possess the aural acuity to understand conversation in quiet and noisy environments.
· Must be able to communicate effectively.
· Some task require he/she to work around obnoxious odors and heinous scenes.
· Must be capable of sitting for long periods of time.
